History of Château d’Azay-le-Rideau

Berthelot initiated the construction of the current château in 1518. His aim was to blend medieval defensive architecture with the grandeur of the Italian Renaissance. At that time, the Renaissance had recently gained popularity in France. His vision was to create a luxurious residence that displayed his wealth and social standing. However, political fortunes shifted. Berthelot soon fell out of favor with the king. This led to his exile and the seizure of his property. After this, the château passed into royal hands, and later into those of the Marquis of Biencourt in the 18th century.
