Originally known as “Léim Uí Bhanáin,” meaning “Leap of the O’Bannons,” the castle was constructed atop a rocky outcrop. The name derives from a local legend in which two members of the O’Bannon family reportedly competed for control of the site. The competition involved leaping off the rock, with the surviving member securing the right to build the castle. This dramatic beginning set the tone for the centuries of conflict and intrigue that followed.

Over the centuries, Leap Castle became a stronghold for the O’Carroll clan, a powerful and often feared Irish family. It was during their tenure that the castle witnessed some of its most violent episodes. In the 16th century, a significant feud broke out within the O’Carroll family. This led to betrayals and brutal murders. The most infamous event involved the murder of a priest by his own brother within what is now called the “Bloody Chapel.”

In 1922, during the Irish Civil War, Leap Castle was partially destroyed by fire. The blaze gutted much of the structure. This left the castle in ruins for several decades.
