Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle is one of England’s most iconic and best-preserved medieval fortresses. It stands proudly in Northumberland, in northeast England. History of Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle was founded in 1096 by Ivo de Vescy, a Norman baron who received the land following the Norman Conquest. However, the Percy family purchased the castle in 1309, and they have remained its owners ever since. Henry Percy, the first Earl of Northumberland, transformed it into a formidable medieval fortress in the fourteenth century. Furthermore, it played a significant role in the wars between England and Scotland throughout the medieval period.

During the fifteenth century, the castle witnessed many turbulent events of the Wars of the Roses. Moreover, it was besieged and changed hands several times during this period. Therefore, it carries deep scars of English political history. In the eighteenth century, the first Duke of Northumberland commissioned major renovation works. In addition, the landscape architect Lancelot “Capability” Brown redesigned the surrounding parkland during this period.

The Victorian era brought a second major transformation. The fourth Duke of Northumberland hired the architect Anthony Salvin to remodel the interior in the Italian Renaissance style. Consequently, the state rooms became among the grandest in England. Furthermore, the castle’s art collection, including works by Titian and Canaletto, grew substantially during this time.

Current Status

Today, Alnwick Castle is the home of the twelfth Duke of Northumberland and his family. However, the castle is open to visitors from spring through autumn each year. Visitors can explore the state rooms, the knight’s quest, and the famous broomstick flying lessons. Moreover, the grounds include The Alnwick Garden, a separate ticketed attraction with spectacular water features and a poison garden. In addition, the castle regularly hosts events, festivals, and educational programmes. Therefore, Alnwick Castle remains one of the most visited historic attractions in northeast England.
