History of Ashford Castle

The history of Ashford Castle spans nearly eight centuries. It embodies the political, social, and architectural shifts that have shaped Ireland. Originally constructed in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family, the castle was erected as a strategic stronghold. It was during the Norman expansion into Connacht. The de Burgos retained ownership until the early 16th century, when it passed into the hands of the O’Conor family. A prominent Irish clan. In the 16th century, the O’Conor family relinquished the castle to the English crown. Initiating a new chapter in its history under British influence.

By the early 1700s, Ashford Castle had been acquired by the Browne family of Galway. They undertook significant renovations and expansions. They constructed large additions during their ownership, including several fortified extensions, which gave the castle its well-known imposing and luxurious characteristics. The castle underwent a profound transformation in the mid-19th century. When Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness, a member of the famous brewing family, acquired it in 1852. He undertook extensive renovations, adding the impressive Victorian-style extensions that are seen today. This further enhanced the castle’s grandeur.

Following his death, ownership of the castle passed to his son, Lord Ardilaun. He expanded the estate to 26,000 acres and introduced many enhancements, including formal gardens and additional woodlands. In the 20th century, the castle was sold to Noel Huggard, who transformed it into a luxury hotel. This initiated its legacy as an elite destination for world travelers. During its years as a hotel, Ashford Castle has hosted numerous prominent guests. Including members of royalty, political figures, and Hollywood celebrities. Among its most famous visitors have been King George V, President Ronald Reagan, and actor John Wayne. He filmed scenes from The Quiet Man in nearby Cong.
