Location of Predjama Castle

History of Predjama Castle

The first recorded mention of Predjama Castle dates back to 1274, when it was built by the Patriarchs of Aquileia. Constructed in the Gothic style, it was strategically positioned within the natural cave system to provide protection from attackers. The integration of architecture and nature allowed its inhabitants to use the cave as a shelter while maintaining control over the surrounding region.

One of the most famous figures associated with the castle is Erazem Lueger (also known as Erasmus of Predjama). He was a 15th-century knight and nobleman who is often compared to Robin Hood. According to legend, Erazem, a rebellious baron, defied the Habsburg Emperor Frederick III and took refuge within the castle. Despite a prolonged siege by imperial forces, Erazem managed to survive for over a year, thanks to a secret tunnel leading from the castle to the outside world. This underground passage allowed him to receive supplies in secrecy. His enemies remained unaware of how he continued to resist their blockade.

The legend tells of his eventual downfall when a servant, bribed by his enemies, betrayed him by signaling the exact moment he was vulnerable. As Erazem visited the castle’s lavatory—located on the outer edge of the fortress—a cannonball struck, killing him instantly. This dramatic tale adds to the castle’s mystique, making it a site of great historical and cultural intrigue.

Following Erazem’s demise, the castle changed ownership multiple times. In the 16th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by the Cobenzi family, who further fortified its structure. By the 19th century, it had become an object of interest for historians and travelers, fascinated by its unusual location and rich history.

Current status

Today, Predjama Castle is one of Slovenia’s most visited cultural and historical landmarks. Managed as part of the Postojna Cave Park, the site offers guided tours that take visitors through its medieval chambers, dungeons, and living quarters. The tour also includes access to the secret passage that once allowed Erazem to escape unnoticed.

The castle’s location above a network of caves adds to its allure. Beneath the structure, the Predjama Cave system extends for several kilometers, providing habitat for numerous species of bats. The lower parts of the cave can be visited during the summer months when the bats are not hibernating.
