History of Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte

The château was constructed between 1658 and 1661 for Nicolas Fouquet, the Superintendent of Finances to King Louis XIV. Fouquet envisioned a residence that would symbolize his wealth and cultural sophistication. To achieve this, he enlisted three of the most celebrated talents of the era: architect Louis Le Vau, painter-decorator Charles Le Brun, and landscape designer André Le Nôtre. Together, these visionaries created a harmonious ensemble that would later inspire the design of the Palace of Versailles.

At its inauguration in August 1661, a lavish fête was held, attended by King Louis XIV and the French nobility. The event, however, marked the downfall of Fouquet. Impressed by the château’s splendor yet suspicious of its financier’s opulence, the King accused Fouquet of embezzlement. Authorities arrested Fouquet shortly after the event and sentenced him to life imprisonment. After his imprisonment, the crown confiscated the estate and transferred many of its artworks to Versailles.

In the centuries that followed, the château changed hands multiple times, enduring periods of neglect and restoration. By the late 19th century, it faced the threat of complete ruin. However, its fate was changed when industrialist Alfred Sommier purchased the property in 1875. Sommier and his descendants undertook extensive renovations to restore the château to its former glory.

Current status

Today, the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte remains privately owned by the de Vogüé family, who have opened the estate to the public. It is now celebrated as a historic monument and a cultural treasure, attracting over 250,000 visitors annually. Guests can explore the opulent interiors, including the grand salon, which features a stunning frescoed dome painted by Charles Le Brun. The estate’s vast gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, are another highlight. People regard these gardens as one of the finest examples of French formal landscaping, showcasing their symmetrical patterns, water features, and sculptures.
